Early Life, Family and Training
Christian Gullager was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on March 1, 1759. He was the son of Christian Guldager Prang and Marie Elisabeth Dalberg. His upbringing in the Danish capital provided the foundation for a life defined by movement and shifting professional identities across the Atlantic.
His formal education took place at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, an institution that shaped his technical precision. His talent was recognized early by his instructors; in 1780, he was awarded a silver medal at the Academy. This recognition marked the beginning of a career that would eventually lead him away from his native Denmark and toward the burgeoning cities of the American coast.
Activity in Newburyport and Boston
Upon his arrival in the American colonies, Gullager first made his presence known in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in 1786. This period marked a significant transition in his personal life, as he was married during that same year. His early years in the colonies were defined by this movement through the coastal settlements of New England, establishing a foothold for his professional practice as a painter.
By 1789, Gullager had settled into the urban environment of Boston, where he would remain for much of the following decade. His presence in the city was marked by a dual commitment to his craft and the instruction of others. In 1792, he expanded his professional reach by establishing a drawing academy at his residence on Tremont Hill. This academy allowed him to formalize his influence on the local artistic community, providing a space for students to study under his guidance while he maintained his own practice.
His tenure in Boston lasted until 1797, a period during which he navigated the social and professional requirements of a growing American city. During these years, his work was characterized by the demands of portraiture and the specific needs of local theatrical venues. He moved through the city's social circles, securing commissions that reflected the changing landscape of the young republic.
Work in New York and Philadelphia
The turn of the century saw Gullager shifting his focus toward the growing urban centers of the Mid-Atlantic. He arrived in New York City in 1797, where he remained until 1798. This brief period in the city served as a prelude to a much longer and more settled chapter of his career in Philadelphia. From 1798 until 1805, he was a fixture in the Philadelphia community, appearing regularly in the city directories. During these years, his practice evolved, and he was noted for his work as a miniature painter during the final three years of his residence there.
His connection to New York was not entirely severed by his move south. He returned to the city again between 1806 and 1807, continuing to navigate the professional demands of the era. While his time in Philadelphia was marked by a certain stability in the city's social and professional records, his later movements suggest a man still adjusting to the shifting landscape of American art . He remained active in his craft, moving between these major hubs as he sought to sustain his livelihood in a developing nation.
Patrons and Theatrical Commissions
Gullager’s professional life was defined by a dual devotion to the formal portrait and the ephemeral stage. In the bustling urban centers of Boston, New York , and Philadelphia, he secured the likenesses of the era's most influential figures. His most notable subject was President George Washington, whom he portrayed in 1789. This commission required a keen eye for character, as he sought to capture the man behind the political stature. His ability to navigate these high-profile circles allowed him to move between the private drawing rooms of the elite and the public spaces of the growing American cities.
Beyond the steady demand for portraiture, Gullager found a specialized niche in the theatrical arts. He served as a scenery painter for Boston's Federal Street Theatre, contributing to the visual landscape of early American drama. This work required a different kind of technical skill, moving from the intimate detail of a face to the expansive requirements of stage design. His involvement in the theater suggests an artist comfortable with the shifting demands of his patrons, whether they sought a permanent record of their own image or a temporary backdrop for a performance.
Key Portrait Works
Gullager’s brush found its most significant subject in the early years of his American career. In 1789, he undertook a portrait of George Washington, a task that required him to follow the president during a tour of New England. While some accounts suggest he captured a likeness of the leader from a pew in a Boston chapel, the resulting work remains a notable record of the first president's presence in the colonies.
The year 1789 also proved prolific for the Danish-born painter, as he secured several commissions that reflected his growing reputation among the social circles of the time. He completed a portrait of John May and captured the likeness of Elizabeth Sewall Salisbury. His ability to navigate these various social requirements allowed him to move between the formal needs of public figures and the private requirements of prominent families.
His output during this period included several other notable subjects:
Martha Saunders Salisbury, 1789
Captain Offin Boardman, about 1787
Benjamin Greenleaf Boardman, about 1787
Sarah Greenleaf Boardman, about 1787
Later Years and Death
The final decade of Gullager’s life was marked by a quiet retreat from the bustling artistic circles of New York . By the turn of the century, his focus had shifted toward the professional landscape of Philadelphia, where he remained for much of his later years. This period of his life was not without personal upheaval; on December 27, 1809, his marriage to Mary Sellman ended in divorce, a transition that occurred while he was established in the city.
His presence in Philadelphia continued until his passing in 1826. He died on November 12, 1826, at the age of 67. The artist was laid to rest in the Second Presbyterian Church Yard, located at the intersection of Third and Arch Streets. His life, which had spanned the distance between the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the growing urban centers of the early American republic, concluded in the same city where he had spent his final professional chapters.
