Kees Verwey: taiteilija

A Life Within the Studio Walls

Kees Verwey lived much of his life in a 17th-century building on the Spaarne in Haarlem. He was born in Amsterdam and grew up surrounded by a family deeply rooted in culture, being the nephew of the poet Albert Verwey and the architect H.P. Berlage. His early years were shaped by the collections he saw through his uncle, including works by Isaac Israels and Willem Witsen. These early encounters with still lifes, particularly those by Floris Verster, left a lasting mark on how he approached a subject.

His formal training took him to the School for Arts and Crafts in Haarlem and later to the Rijksacademische van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. He studied under teachers such as Henri Frédéric Boot, Johannes Hendricus Jurres, and Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita. While he attended these institutions, he often found himself drawn back to the lessons of Boot, the founder of the Haarlem School. His studio on the Spaarne became a place of focused observation, where he could remain close to his subjects without needing to travel far.

The Language of Light and Color

Verwey’s work often centered on the small, quiet details found within his immediate reach. He painted flowers, bowls, jugs, eggs, and portraits, frequently using his studio as a backdrop. His style grew from an interest in Impressionism and the Hague School, later incorporating elements of colorism and even influences from artists like Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard. He looked at the way light moved through a room, noting how it filtered through curtains to touch a surface.

In his technical approach, he used watercolor on firm, grainy paper to catch specific light effects. This method allowed for a certain transparency in the paint layers. As time passed, his work began to show traces of modern influences, including the colorful expressionism of the CoBrA group and the structural ideas found in the works of Picasso and Braque. He maintained a focus on observation, believing that even a simple object could hold deep interest if looked at closely enough.

Recognition and Legacy

His professional path saw significant milestones, such as his 1931 exhibition at the Frans Hals Museum alongside other Haarlem artists. In 1961, he was awarded the Rembrandt Prize. His work has been held in various collections, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, and the Singer Museum in Laren. He was also a member of several local groups, such as the Hollandse Aquarellistenkring and the Kennemer Kunstenaarskring.

Toward the end of his life, Verwey took an active role in ensuring his work had a permanent home. In 1984, he offered his entire oeuvre to the municipality of Haarlem. When finding a location proved difficult, he personally financed the remodeling of a hall to house his collection. This collection, managed through the Kees Verwey Foundation, is now presented in the Verweyhal as part of the Museum De Hallen and the Frans Hals Museum. He remained active in his studio well into his later years, continuing to paint until his death in Haarlem.
