Richard John Spare: A Life in Print & Paint

Early Life and Education

Born in London, United Kingdom in 1951, Richard John Spare developed a passion for art from an early age.

He pursued formal training at Maidstone College of Art from 1971 to 1974, studying painting under the guidance of Fred Cuming.

This foundational education instilled in him a strong technical base and an appreciation for artistic expression.

Master Printmaker & Collaborative Work

Following his studies, Spare dedicated himself to mastering the art of printmaking at Thomas Ross & Son of Putney.

He quickly rose to prominence as a master printmaker, collaborating with some of the most significant artists of the late 20th century.

His expertise was sought after by renowned figures such as David Hockney, Robert Ryman, Francesco Clemente, Donald Sultan, Jim Dine, and Keith Haring.

Spare expertly editioned their work, demonstrating a remarkable ability to translate artistic visions into tangible prints.

Artistic Development & Style

While highly respected for his printmaking skills, Spare began focusing on his own artistic endeavors in the late 1980s.

He has since created a vast body of work comprising over 400 images, primarily inspired by nature and travel.

His style is characterized by a unique perspective, often employing hand-printed drypoints and delicate watercolor washes.
