The Life and Artistic Journey of Wilhelm Dürr the Elder
Born in Villingen, Germany, Wilhelm Dürr the Elder pursued an artistic path shaped by his upbringing. Following the influence of his father, Fidelis Dürr, he arrived at the art academy in Vienna in 1830. His early training focused on genre painting, drawing inspiration from Josef Danhauser, Johann Matthias Ranftl, and Peter Fendi. His artistic direction shifted while working in the studio of Leopold Kupelwieser, where he developed a passion for history painting and turned toward the Nazarenes.
His travels took him to Italy on two occasions. His first visit to Rome occurred in 1839, followed by a stay in 1840 that included visits to Venice and Bologna, lasting until 1842. During this time, he was part of a group including Ernst Deger, Franz Ittenbach, Andreas Müller, and Karl Müller. After returning to Baden due to illness in 1843, he settled in Freiburg, where he married Berta Gruny in 1844 and became a founding member of the Ponte Molle artists' society.
Works and Professional Recognition
Dürr's career was marked by significant ecclesiastical commissions and official honors. He was appointed court painter and received the Knight's Cross I. Class of the Order of the Zähringer Lion in 1874. His body of work includes various altarpieces for churches in Baden and Alsace, as well as portraits for the princely court and copper engravings for Johann Peter Hebel's Alemannic poems. His later years were spent in Munich, where he moved to be with his son, Wilhelm, before passing away in 1890.
