Sergio Dangelo: elu ja looming

The Life and Career of Sergio Dangelo

Born in Milan, Italy, on 19 April 1932, Sergio Dangelo spent much of his life navigating the creative landscapes of Europe. His formative years were shaped by studies held between Italy, France, and Switzerland. This movement through different borders allowed him to settle for several years in Brussels, a period that brought him into contact with various avant-garde and surrealist circles.

Dangelo’s professional life was defined by a drive to build new artistic communities. He was a founder of the Arte nucleare movement and also acted as a co-founder of the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus. These efforts reflected a lifelong commitment to pushing the boundaries of what art could represent and how artists could organize themselves.

The Italian painter and illustrator remained active in the art world until his death in Milan on 4 January 2022. He lived to the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy rooted in the experimental spirit of the mid-century movements he helped establish.

Artistic Movements and Key Collaborations

Dangelo’s creative life was deeply intertwined with the avant-garde circles of Europe. During his years in Brussels, he found himself in the company of the COBRA group, an experience that helped shape his perspective on the role of the artist. This period of connection proved vital as he returned to his roots in Milan. In 1951, he joined forces with Enrico Baj to establish the Arte nucleare movement, a group that sought to explore new territories of expression through the nuclear art tendency.

His collaborative spirit only grew from there. In 1953, Dangelo, Baj, and Asger Jorn came together to found the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus. This shared vision for art led to further organized efforts, such as the 1954 establishment of the Incontri Internazionali della Ceramica in Albisola, an international meeting of ceramics organized alongside Baj, Jorn, and others. These years were marked by a constant drive to build new structures for artistic thought, including the publication of the magazine Il Gesto between 1955 and 1959.

Dangelo continued to push against established norms throughout his career. He was a supporter of the Contro lo Stile manifesto in 1957, signaling a departure from traditional aesthetics. Even in his later years, his desire to organize and redefine artistic expression remained strong. In 1998, he returned to Milan to co-found The new manifest constructivism with Orazio Bacci, proving that his commitment to movement-building lasted a lifetime.

Techniques and Artistic Styles

Dangelo’s approach to the canvas was often physical and intense. He practiced a sign-gestural style of painting, working with dense chromatic matter that felt heavy and present. His hand moved with a lyrical quality, leaving behind marks that expressed the unconscious through fast, manual skills. This tactile energy was most evident in his "nuclear paintings," which emerged during his early years in the movement he helped found.

Beyond the traditional brushstroke, he was drawn to the assembly of disparate parts. He developed a series of collage paintings that he called “Hand-made,” a term given to them in 1960. These works were not simple arrangements; they were composed of fragments from various objects and materials, creating strange assemblages that could exist on a flat plane or appear free in space. His interest in the physical properties of objects led him to work with many different media, including ceramics, lithographs, etchings, and paintings on enamelled sheet metal. He also produced various objects that emphasized the act of manipulation over the finished form.

His creative life was deeply tied to the materials he could touch and shape. This connection to craft was reflected in his later years when he helped found the Bludiprussia Artistic and Cultural Center in Albisola Marina in 1991.

Exhibitions and Major Collections

Dangelo’s presence in the international art scene was marked by frequent invitations to some of the most significant gatherings of the era. He participated in the São Paulo Art Biennial and the Biennale de Paris, bringing his unique perspective to these global stages. His work also found a place at the Rome Quadriennale and was featured in six different editions of the Venice Biennale. In his home country, he was a regular contributor to the Milan Triennale, appearing in five editions of the event.

The reach of his creative output is reflected in the institutions that have chosen to preserve his legacy. His pieces are held in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, ensuring his vision remains accessible to a wide audience. Additionally, his work is part of the permanent collection at the Israel Museum. In Italy, his contributions are kept within the Museo MAGA in Gallarate, securing his place in the history of Italian modern art.
