Scallop
From the artist, Michelle Kalman: Curves are integral to my work because they offer a seductive path for the eye and hand to follow through and around the sculpture. Most of my forms rise from a bowl shape for a gentle connection with the ground. In “Scallop” the curves illustrate relationship: they interact in dialog while flowing together in parallel, actively supporting each other, and rising independently. The hollows echo the strength of the shapes to integrate absence and presence. Multiple firings and coats of glaze transformed the surface, amplifying the rhythm of the piece far beyond my intention or control. For me, clay is always a dynamic partner full of surprises in the creative dance.
