Early Life and Education Sir Gordon Howard Eliot Hodgkin (1932-2017) was born in Hammersmith, London, on August 6th, 1932. His father, Eliot Hodgkin, held a managerial position at ICI – Imperial Chemical Industries – and possessed a passion for horticulture. Hodgkin’s maternal grandfather, Gordon Hewart, served as a journalist, lawyer, Member of Parliament (MP), and Lord Chief Justice, shaping his intellectual upbringing from an early
age. This lineage instilled in him a deep appreciation for both artistic expression and legal precision—influences that would subtly permeate his entire oeuvre. Hodgkin pursued formal education at Eton College and subsequently studied Fine Art at Chelsea School of Art before earning a doctorate from Goldsmiths University of London.
