    Sobre esta obra

Fuck Off — Sonni Ali Ber

Sonni was part of a generation of artists who brought aesthetics from animation, illustration and graphic design to the streets in the aftermath of the 2001 crisis. One of the driving motivations of this art movement was to bring art to the streets which created a stark contrast with the suffocating negativity caused by political propaganda and activist graffiti. Artists brought colour and character art to the walls in an effort to disrupt to the monotony of politically charged messages. But whilst the colours they painted were bright and the characters appeared friendly, there was always an element of recognition that they were painting to oppose the hostile climate of the city. This gallery work by Sonni is a beautiful illustration of how people can force themselves to smile and appear happy whilst stifling their sadness and rage.

    A Living Canvas:

At its core, Graffitimundo champions street art as a dynamic form of expression – a testament to Buenos Aires' cultural pulse. It acknowledges that graffiti isn’t merely pigment on concrete; it’s a powerful medium for conveying ideas, challenging conventions, and reflecting the realities of Argentine society.

Visitors embark on expertly crafted tours delving into the history, techniques, and socio-political significance embedded within Buenos Aires’ graffiti landscape. These expeditions illuminate not just visual aesthetics but also the narratives shaping Argentina's urban identity—stories whispered from alleyways and splashed across building facades.

Collection Highlights: Reflecting Buenos Aires’ Soul

Graffitimundo’s curated selection showcases a breathtaking diversity of artistic styles, mirroring the multifaceted character of Buenos Aires itself. Among its standout pieces are “Untitled from the series Buenos Aires Buenos Aires” by Sara Facio—a poignant black & white photograph capturing candid moments of urban life with remarkable realism and timeless appeal. Facio's masterful use of light and shadow evokes a sense of intimacy, inviting viewers to contemplate the beauty hidden within everyday scenes. Alongside this evocative image is “Sueño N° 7, Buenos Aires” by Grete Stern Coppola – a captivating collage blending Parisian landmarks alongside whimsical figures, executed in bold lines and vibrant colors that evoke an irresistible sense of urban absurdity. Coppola’s meticulous layering creates a visual tapestry brimming with symbolism—a playful critique of cultural iconography that simultaneously celebrates the city's artistic heritage. Furthermore, "Paris - buenos aires" by Antonio Bueno presents a striking juxtaposition of styles, utilizing naive collage techniques to convey a message of optimism and resilience. Bueno’s deliberate simplicity underscores the enduring power of art to transcend boundaries and inspire contemplation. Finally, the work of bs.as.stncl—a Buenos Aires stencil collective since 2001—demonstrates powerful subversive art, confronting iconic imagery and sparking dialogue about social issues. Their bold graphics and assertive compositions serve as a reminder that art can be a catalyst for change – challenging perceptions and prompting critical engagement with societal norms.

    Architectural Context & Museum Design

Situated in Floresta, Buenos Aires’ bohemian heart, Graffitimundo occupies a repurposed industrial building—a deliberate architectural choice designed to resonate with the museum's conceptual ethos. The space prioritizes natural light and openness, mirroring the vibrancy of the street art it celebrates – an intentional gesture to immerse visitors within the artistic environment. Its façade incorporates textured concrete panels reminiscent of graffiti surfaces, subtly reinforcing Graffitimundo’s core belief: that art should exist in dialogue with its surroundings—a testament to Buenos Aires' enduring spirit of innovation and creative expression.
