    About this artwork

St Peter weeping — Stanislovas Grigalauskas

St Peter is an apostle and the first Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He is a former fisherman called Simon. For a long time he fished together with his brother Andrew. Peter met Jesus at the River Jordan, where he came to listen to St John the Baptist’s preaching. It is here that Jesus called him a rock (Petros in Greek) and invited him to become his disciple. The symbolic meaning of the name is revealed by the words of Jesus that Peter would be the rock upon which Jesus would build his church. All the Gospels state that Peter betrayed Jesus three times. During the time of persecution of Christians, Peter decided to escape from Rome, but after meeting Jesus, he returned. He died as a martyr. He was crucified upside down, because due to his betrayal of Jesus he saw himself unworthy to be crucified in the same way as Jesus.

    A Legacy of Devotion

The life and artistry of Stanislovas Grigalauskas, also known by the name Stanislovas Daunoras, offer a window into a profound era of Lithuanian creative expression. Born in 1893 in Jieznas, Lithuania, his journey as an artist is deeply intertwined with the spiritual and cultural fabric of his homeland. While much of the specific biographical detail regarding his early years remains shrouded in the mists of history, his presence in the annals of art is marked by a commitment to themes that resonate with eternal human emotions.

His work, categorized within the Modern period, demonstrates a capacity to engage with heavy, sacred subject matter. One of his most notable contributions to the visual record is the evocative piece St Peter weeping. In this work, the artist captures the profound psychological and spiritual weight of the apostle's remorse. Through his brush, the narrative of betrayal and subsequent redemption becomes a tangible, visual experience, inviting the viewer to contemplate the complexities of faith and human frailty.

    Artistic Significance and Heritage

The historical significance of Grigalauskas lies in his ability to bridge the gap between traditional religious iconography and the evolving sensibilities of the Modern era. His work is recognized within important cultural repositories, such as the Lithuanian Art Fund, ensuring that his perspective on sacred history continues to be studied and appreciated by those interested in the spiritual heritage of Lithuania.

Though the specific technical evolution of his style is a subject for deep scholarly inquiry, the enduring impact of his imagery remains clear. A Sanctuary of Soulful Heritage

Nestled within the historic heart of Vilnius, the

    Lithuanian Art Fund

offers far more than a mere exhibition of objects; it provides an intimate portal into the very essence of Lithuania’s artistic soul. Unlike the sweeping, monumental narratives found in grand national galleries, this private collection, established by the visionary Dr. Jaunius Gumbis, invites a profound personal connection. It is a place where history does not feel like a distant memory, but a living, breathing presence. The museum serves as a delicate bridge to the era of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, a period of unparalleled cultural flourishing where the influences of Poland, Russia, and Western Europe converged to create a unique, multifaceted identity.

The architecture of the Lithuanian Art Fund further enhances this immersive experience. Housed in a beautifully preserved historic building, the museum provides a contemplative atmosphere that is rare in the modern age. The setting itself acts as a silent curator, its aged walls and quiet corners encouraging a slow, meditative approach to art appreciation. For collectors and interior designers seeking inspiration, the Fund offers a masterclass in how art can transform a space into a sanctuary of culture.

    A Tapestry of Diverse Traditions

The collection itself is a tapestry of diverse traditions, woven with threads of folk art, sculpture, and rare literature. Visitors find themselves wandering through layers of time, encountering handcrafted treasures that whisper stories of ancient spiritual beliefs and the rhythmic pulse of daily Lithuanian life. The museum’s strength lies in its curated intimacy, prioritizing the emotional resonance of each piece over sheer volume. From the intricate patterns of traditional folk crafts to the evocative power of oil paintings, every item has been selected to foster a sense of discovery.

Among the collection's most captivating highlights are the works that capture the shifting light and spirit of the Lithuanian landscape and its people:

The Watercolor Landscapes of Józef Bałzukiewicz:

These works offer a masterful glimpse into 18th-century life, where every brushstroke reconstructs the dignity of a nobleman or the quiet bustle of a street corner with historical precision.

    The Views of Helena Römer-Ochenkowska:

Her delicate, translucent layers of Vilnius transport the viewer to the pastoral serenity of 1900.

The Spiritual Depth of Stanislovas Grigalauskas (Daunoras):

    His hauntingly beautiful

    ‘St Peter Weeping’

provides a profound emotive depth for those drawn to spiritual symbolism.

The Symbolist Landscapes of Kazimierz Stabrowski:

Dreamy vistas that invite the observer to lose themselves in a bygone era.

It remains a singular destination for those who seek to understand not just the history of Lithuanian art, but the enduring spirit that continues to define its creative legacy.
