A life between Utrecht and Bruges

Gertrude Cornélie Marie de Pélichy began her days in Utrecht, though the path of her life moved toward the Southern Netherlands. In 1753, her family settled in Bruges, a place that would remain a constant throughout her years. Her early training took shape under Paul de Cock, where she first learned to handle the brush and understand the weight of oil on canvas. The movement of her life later brought her to Paris in 1767, a period marked by study under Joseph-Benoît Suvée. This time in France allowed her to absorb different ways of seeing before she eventually returned to the quiet streets of Bruges.

Her presence in the art world was defined by a steady focus on specific subjects. She did not wander through many genres, but instead settled into the study of people and religious themes. Her hands worked with the textures of skin and fabric, capturing the stillness required for portraits and the gravity found in sacred scenes.

The brush and the subject

In her studio, the work often centered on the human form and the quiet dignity of its subjects. Some of her canvases reached a significant scale, such as her Portrait of the Emperor Joseph II, which measures nearly three meters in height. This large-scale oil painting shows her ability to manage space and presence within a single frame. Her religious works, like Ecce Homo from 1776, demonstrate a different kind of focus, one that looks closely at the emotional weight of the figures depicted.

Her technical choices were grounded in the traditions she learned from her teachers:

  • The use of oil medium to build depth and light.
  • A focus on portraiture that captures specific individuals, such as the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II.
  • Religious compositions like Caritas Romana, which explores themes of charity through a classical lens.

A lasting presence in collections

The works she left behind remain held in places where they can still be seen by those who look for them. Much of her output is preserved within the Groeningemuseum, where her paintings exist alongside the history of the region. These pieces, ranging from small religious studies to large imperial portraits, provide a window into the era when she practiced her craft. She lived until 1825, leaving behind a body of work that reflects the training and the locations that shaped her life.
