Winter landscape with elegant figures ice-skating

In "Winter landscape with elegant figures ice-skating" by Adam Van Breen, the artist establishes an asymmetrical composition that immediately draws the eye to the left foreground. Here, a large, gnarled, leafless tree dominates the space, its dark and textured branches reaching across the upper quadrant of the scene. These organic and irregular lines provide a stark, structural contrast to the vast, pale expanse of ice that stretches across the middle…

winter landscape with skating

The air feels heavy and damp, the kind of chill that settles deep into the bones on an overcast winter day. Beneath a pale, diffused sky, a vast expanse of ice stretches toward a distant horizon, acting as a wide, panoramic stage for the rhythms of everyday life. Figures move across the frozen surface in a delicate dance of survival and leisure. Some glide with purpose on skates, their dark…

Winter landscape with elegant skaters on a frozen lake, ice-breakers and a town in the distance

The scene unfolds across a vast, frozen body of water under a pale, hazy sky. In the foreground, the ice is a smooth, pale surface where several groups of figures move. Some individuals are skating with rhythmic motion, while others stand in small clusters to converse. A horse-drawn sleigh carries seated passengers across the white expanse. To the left, a large wooden boat with a curved mast and a Dutch…

Landscape with Frozen Canal, Skaters and an Ice-Boat, Adam van Breen, 1611

The foreground of this ice scene is dominated by an ice-boat with elegantly clad passengers and a Dutch flag on the afterdeck. A print by Christoffel van Sichem shows a similar kind of vessel, a ‘schuyt die op ijsers staet’ (‘boat standing on runners’).1 The text under the print states that Prince Maurits had already gone for a ride in one in 1610. This was a new invention along the…

Skating on the Frozen Amstel River

We look slightly down onto a scene showing light-skinned men, women, and children ice skating on a frozen river in this horizontal landscape painting. We get the impression of hundreds of people gathered on the ice creating a crowd that extends into the hazy distance. The couple dozen closest to us are the most defined. A few clusters of people and individuals in particular draw our attention. For example, a…

Winter Landscape with Skaters, Adam van Breen, c. 1615 - c. 1620

This painting, which has never before been described or reproduced in the literature, is a typical but not very well preserved winter landscape by Adam van Breen, as is confirmed by the monogram AB on the front of the icebound boat in the foreground. The panel, which has unfortunately been transferred to a modern support, is larger than most of Van Breen’s winter landscapes, but the composition and the figures…

The Vijverberg, The Hague, in Winter, with Prince Maurits and his Retinue in the Foreground, Adam van Breen, 1618

Prince Maurits is seen with his retinue and bodyguards against the backdrop of skaters on the frozen Hofvijver in The Hague. On the left are the buildings lining the lake, in the centre the houses on the Buitenhof and the Plaats with the tower of the Sint-Jacobskerk above them, and on the right Lange Vijverberg and a small part of the St Sebastian Civic Guard Hall.2 On the civic guard…
