A sculpture titled, A cloak as a dagger in wood and barbed wire by the South African artist, Avitha Sooful (b. 1964). Formed from the trunk of a Silver Oak tree and then held with rusted barbed wire, the artist has engraved extracts from the Natives Resettlement Act No 19, 1954. This formed part of the apartheid system of racial segregation in South Africa. It permitted the removal of blacks from any area within and next to the magisterial district of Johannesburg by the South African government. A cloak as a dagger also reflects on interpreting social issues and their impact on individuals. A cloak as a dagger reflects on land claims and laws which govern land ownership. Within this context, issues of land remain contested and violent legacies of both apartheid and our South African democracy. Short Biography: Avitha Sooful was born in 1964 in Durban, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. She studied at the former University of Durban-Westville (today the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal) where she obtained her undergraduate and Master
