Wen Chu: kunstneren
The Life and Art of Wen Chu
Wen Chu, also known as Wen Shu or Hanshan, was a Chinese illustrator and painter of the Ming dynasty. Born into a family of respected artists, she was the daughter of the landscape painter Wen Congjian and the great-granddaughter of the leading Wu School painter Wen Zhengming. Alongside her brother, Wen Ran, she was taught to paint from a young age by her father. She lived a reclusive life in a villa near the Hanshan Temple outside Suzhou with her husband, Zhao Yun, and their daughter, Zhao Zhao.
Following the death of her father and the subsequent decline of her family's fortunes, Wen Chu likely turned to commercial art production. She became a sought-after tutor for girls and married women of the gentry. Her professional success was such that she trained female assistants to assist with her workload, and she once produced one illustration a day for one thousand days for the collection Pattern of Plants and Insects by Hanshan.
Artistic Style and Subjects
Wen Chu was recognized as a master of flora and insects, often working in various formats including hanging scrolls, fan paintings, and illustrations. Her compositions typically featured essential elements set against plain backgrounds, a technique that directed the viewer's eye toward her delicate brushwork and pale colors. Her approach was intimate, often framing flowers with rough rocks in a manner that echoed the garden layouts of her era. She was noted for her attention to detail, even when utilizing the mogu (boneless) technique.
Her surviving works include:
