Viive Kuks: liv og værk
The Quiet Precision of Line and Landscape
Viive Kuks began her formal training in 1966 at the Tallinn School of Light Industry, focusing on the art of textile design. By 1970, she had moved into the specialized study of graphics at the Tallinn Art School. It was here that she studied under Evald Okas, a period that shaped her technical foundation. After receiving her diploma in free graphics in 1976, she chose to settle in Võru. Since that time, she has worked as a freelance artist, finding a rhythm in the landscape and the human form.
Her work often settles on the details of the natural world. She has a way of looking at a scene and finding the structure within it, whether through the sharp bite of a drypoint needle or the soft spread of watercolor. Her landscapes are not mere views; they are detailed, realistic observations of the earth. She moves between different mediums to capture these textures:
A Life in Print and Observation
The years following her move to Võru in 1976 saw her establishing herself within the Estonian art community. She became a member of the Artists' Union in 1984, and her exhibitions have been a steady presence since 1977. Her subjects are often rooted in the specificities of the Estonian terrain, capturing the weight of a tree or the stillness of a riverbank. There is a focus on the relationship between the human presence and the environment, often expressed through portraits or expansive, detailed views of the land.
Her technical range allows her to approach a subject from many angles. A print might capture the starkness of a specific tree, such as the Lauri oak in Urvaste, while a painting might explore the light reflecting off the Emajõgi river in Tartu. This commitment to the physical reality of her surroundings defines her practice. She works with a steady hand, focusing on the precision required by her preferred graphic techniques.
