Stanford White: kunstneren
An Architect of the American Renaissance
Stanford White was an American architect and a partner in the significant Beaux-Arts firm McKim, Mead & White. He was known for designing many houses for the wealthy, as well as numerous civic, institutional, and religious buildings. His work included the triumphal arch at Washington Square, which was so popular that a permanent version was commissioned, and the reconstruction of the Rotunda at the University of Virginia. His architectural projects spanned various locations, including New York City, Boston, Baltimore, and Newport, Rhode Island.
White's design expertise extended to residential estates, such as his own estate, Box Hill, and several Long Island mansions. He also engaged in interior decoration, dealing in art and antiques, and planning parties. His professional reach included designing clubhouses for organizations like the Century and Lambs clubs, as well as contributing to the design of Nikola Tesla's Wardenclyffe Tower.
Life and Final Moments
Born in New York City, White learned architecture through an apprenticeship, working for Henry H. Richardson before forming his partnership in 1879. He was a social figure with connections to many prominent individuals in the art world. However, his life ended tragically in 1906 when he was murdered during a musical performance at the rooftop theatre of Madison Square Garden. The killer, Harry Kendall Thaw, shot White in front of a crowd.
The subsequent trial of Thaw became known as the "Trial of the Century" due to the public nature of the killing and the involvement of Evelyn Nesbit. While White's architectural legacy remains through various structures, his death was marked by intense news coverage and scrutiny of his personal life.
