The Surveyor of the North Born in Trondheim, Norway, Christian Due lived a life defined by the rugged edges of the northern coastline. Before he ever took up the brush to capture the light upon the water, he was a man of maps and measurements. As a marine officer and a surveyor, his eyes were trained to observe the precise geometry of the earth and the shifting boundaries of the sea. Between 1833 and 1842, he worked along the coasts of
Northern Norway, documenting the land with a surveyor's precision. It was during these expeditions that his relationship with the landscape began to change from one of mere measurement to one of deep observation. The salt air and the vast, lonely stretches of the Arctic coast left a permanent mark on his soul.
