Knud Bull: et portræt af kunstneren
A Life Defined by Displacement
To understand Knud Bull, one must look past the romanticized image of the wandering painter and confront the reality of a man driven to Australia by a criminal conviction. Born in Bergen, Norway, Bull was not merely an artist but a man caught in the machinery of the British penal system. His presence in the Southern Hemisphere began not with a choice, but with a sentence for preparing equipment to print false bank notes. In 1846, he left Great Britain aboard the prison ship John Calvin, a transition that fundamentally altered the trajectory of his work.
This forced relocation brought him through Cape Town and Norfolk Island before he eventually settled in Tasmania. The landscapes he captured were often born from the very circumstances of his transit. His paintings, such as The Wreck of the Waterloo at Cape Town, reflect a period of movement and observation under duress. He was a man whose professional skill was inseparable from his status as a convict.
The Architect of Hobart Landscapes
Once released from custody in 1853, Bull transitioned from a prisoner to a central figure in the early Tasmanian art scene. In an era when professional landscape painters were scarce, he occupied a unique position in Hobart. He did not merely observe the terrain; he documented the emerging colonial identity through precise, topographical views. His work provides a concrete visual record of early Hobart Town and Mount Nelson.
His technical foundation was solid, having studied under J. C. Dahl in Dresden between 1833 and 1834. This training allowed him to move beyond simple sketches into more substantial oil works. His output during the 1850s included:
- Hobart Town and Mount Nelson (1854)
- Henry Chapman (1854)
- Sunrise (1856)
Beyond landscapes, Bull engaged with historical subjects. His painting The Wreck of the George III, now held in the National Gallery of Australia, demonstrates a capacity for narrative weight that goes beyond mere scenery.
A Lasting Visual Record
Bull’s significance lies in his role as a pioneer of Australian landscape painting. He was not an abstract dreamer but a documentarian of a specific time and place. As a teacher at the William Slade Smith Academy, he also helped shape the next generation of local artists. His family legacy continued through his five sons, most of whom pursued painting themselves.
He died in Sydney in 1889, leaving behind a body of work that remains essential for anyone studying the colonial development of Tasmania and New South Wales. His paintings are not mere decorations; they are the surviving evidence of a period defined by convict settlement and the early establishment of Australian colonial life.
