Jens Ferdinand Willumsen: liv og værk

A Life of Many Forms

Jens Ferdinand Willumsen lived a life that refused to be confined to a single medium. Born in Copenhagen in 1863, he moved through the decades as a painter, sculptor, graphic artist, photographer, ceramist, and architect. His career, spanning more than seventy years, was marked by a restless curiosity about how much an artist could encompass. While his roots were firmly planted in Denmark, much of his existence unfolded abroad, particularly in France, where the air of Paris in the early 1890s offered him new ways to see.

His formal training began at the Academy of Art in Copenhagen in 1882. He was a man who struggled with the rigid structures of institutional validation, failing to pass his final examination after three attempts. This lack of official certification did little to halt his momentum. Instead, he sought out new languages of expression, moving from the naturalism and social commitment of his early years toward the more symbolic and expressive modes that would define his later work.

The Language of Symbolism

In the 1890s, Willumsen’s time in Paris brought him into contact with figures such as Paul Gauguin and Odilon Redon. This period shifted his focus toward symbolism, a movement where he sought to give visible form to abstract ideas. He favored a certain simplification of motif, using decorative surfaces to convey meaning rather than mere detail. His work during this era often aimed to depict realities through a symbolic lens, stripping away the unnecessary to find a deeper truth.

One particular etching from 1891, titled Frugtbarhed (Fertility), caused a significant scandal upon its exhibition in Copenhagen. The piece featured his wife, Juliette, and a sprouting grain that mirrored the biological diagrams found in Darwinian evolutionary theory. It was a work that challenged the viewer, suggesting that art itself might follow the same laws of growth and evolution as the natural world. This period of his life was characterized by such provocations, where the use of bright colors and unexpected angles often divided opinion among his contemporaries.

Expansion into Expression and Form

As the century turned, Willumsen’s style underwent another transformation. He moved toward a monumental expressionism, focusing on the tension between humanity and the natural world. His paintings began to depict the individual pitted against elemental forces, often utilizing intense colors and a sense of rapid movement. In works such as A Mountaineer, he captured a sense of energy drawn directly from the landscape.

His sculptural work provided a physical weight to these themes. He produced large-scale pieces in marble and created colossal heads that commanded space. His most notable sculptural undertaking, The Great Relief, was a massive project that began in 1893 and took decades to complete. Beyond the canvas and the stone, his versatility extended to ceramics, where he served as the artistic director for Bing & Grøndahl, and to architecture, including the design of his own home in Hellerup.

A Diverse Legacy

Willumsen’s output was vast and varied, leaving behind a collection of works that span nearly every visual discipline. His contributions include:

  • Painting: Ranging from naturalistic portraits to expressionist landscapes.
  • Sculpture: Including monumental reliefs and carved portrait busts.
  • Graphic Arts: Detailed etchings, lithographs, and woodcuts.
  • Ceramics: Artistic direction and functional yet expressive pottery.

Though he often felt a lack of recognition abroad and experienced periods of tension within the Danish art scene, his influence remained deeply rooted in Scandinavia. He died in 1958, leaving behind a body of work that remains as complex and multifaceted as the man himself.
