A Life of Shifting Shadows

Francisco Augusto Metrass arrived in Lisbon as the son of Neapolitan immigrants, born into a family that managed a prosperous import business. Though his father envisioned a different path for him, the young boy turned toward the Academy of Fine Arts in 1836, beginning his studies at just eleven years old. His early years were defined by the disciplined instruction of Joaquim Rafael and António Manuel da Fonseca. At this stage, he was a painter of faces, finding his footing through the intimate medium of portraiture.

The trajectory of his talent took a significant turn in 1844 when he traveled to Rome. It was here that the influence of the Nazarene movement began to take hold, as he studied alongside German painters such as Johann Friedrich Overbeck and Peter von Cornelius. This period of Roman education provided him with a new lens through which to view his craft, moving his focus away from the individual sitter and toward the broader narratives of history.

The Pursuit of History

Upon returning to Portugal, Metrass underwent a profound transformation. He set aside the quietude of portraiture to embrace the grander, more demanding stage of history painting. This transition was not without its difficulties; his first exhibition, held in the palace of the Count of Lumiares, failed to find the reception he had hoped for. In a moment of decisive redirection, he sold his entire collection at auction and sought further refinement in France.

By 1853, a new maturity had settled upon his brush. His style had evolved again, shedding some of its earlier influences to adopt a manner reminiscent of the old Dutch Masters. This shift brought him the recognition that had previously eluded him. King Ferdinand II became a patron, acquiring his work depicting a scene from the life of Luís Vaz de Camões. The public, too, began to respond to this more grounded, classical approach.

Final Lessons and Departures

Metrass’s professional life reached a peak in 1854 when he won a competition with his painting Solomon's Judgment, an achievement that led to his appointment as a Professor of history painting at the Academy. He continued to share his knowledge and present his work to the international community, notably at the Exposition Universelle in 1855. Even as he explored sketches on Orientalist themes, his core strength remained in the structured narratives of the past.

The end of his life was marked by a struggle with tuberculosis. Seeking relief, he traveled to Italy, but the change in climate offered little solace and only hastened his decline. He eventually moved to Madeira, hoping for a more healthful environment, but passed away there on 14 February 1861. His career remains a record of an artist constantly refining his vision, moving from the personal gaze of the portrait to the expansive reach of historical drama.
