Eric Gustav Tunmarck: liv og værk

A Life Between Two Nations

Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1729, Eric Gustaf Tunmarck spent his life navigating the cultural landscapes of both Sweden and Norway. His early years were defined by the disciplined training of an apprenticeship under Jacob von Schönfeldt, a period that shaped his technical foundation in Gothenburg. By 1760, he had moved to Kongsberg, Norway, a transition that would define his professional identity. He arrived with a certificate from a parish priest, a document that opened doors to significant ecclesiastical commissions. His presence in Norway was marked by a steady movement through the regions of Østlandet, establishing himself as a painter who could handle both the grand scale of a church ceiling and the intimate requirements of a private portrait.

His work was deeply tied to the physical spaces of his time. He contributed to the interior decoration of Kongsberg Church, working alongside Johan Diderich von Dram and Søren Christensen Daugaard. These projects required a high level of craftsmanship, as his duties often extended beyond the canvas to include the marbleizing and staffage of architectural elements. He was a man of the era, a craftsman whose hands were as much involved in the decoration of buildings as they were in the delicate application of paint to a sitter's likeness.

The Hand of the Craftsman

Tunmarck’s artistic style was characterized by a specific, recognizable manner. He did not aim for the soft, blurred edges found in other contemporary works; instead, his figures and trees often appeared stylized, possessing a certain sharpness in their contrast. His repertoire of poses was limited, yet he applied them with a consistency that made his work identifiable to the elite of the merchant and official classes. His technical skill was broad, encompassing several specialized disciplines:

  • Portraiture of high-ranking officials and local elites
  • Church interior decoration and ceiling painting
  • Wall decorations and architectural marbleizing
  • Staffage and decorative painting for building components

One of his most significant achievements was his 1762 portrait of Michael Heltzen, a senior mining official. In this work, Heltzen is depicted in a three-quarter figure, holding a pickaxe, with the mining landscape serving as a backdrop. This piece reflects Tunmarck's ability to blend the formal requirements of a portrait with the specific professional identity of his subject. His work remains preserved in collections such as the Drammen Museum of Art and Cultural History, offering a glimpse into the visual language of 18th-century Norway.

Final Years in Drammen

As his career progressed, Tunmarck became a fixture in the area between Oslo and Kongsberg. He was a mobile artist, traveling to meet the needs of his patrons, yet his life remained anchored in the Norwegian landscape. His livelihood was tied to the patronage of the wealthy, and his death in 1789 in Bragernes, Norway, was reportedly linked to the very materials he used in his trade, specifically lead and solvent poisoning. He was buried in the Fattigkirkegården on Bragernes, leaving behind a body of work that helped define the Rococo aesthetic in the region through his unique, stylized approach to form and light.
