A Life in Shadows and Light

Antonina Rzhevskaya was born into a family of impoverished noble landowners in the village of Shalepnyky, within the Tver Governorate of the Russian Empire. After her father passed away, her mother moved the family to Tver, where Antonina attended an all-female grammar school before later moving to Moscow for her gymnasium studies. To help support her family during these lean years, she worked as a proofreader.

Her path toward painting began in 1880 when she started auditing classes at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. She studied under Vladimir Makovsky and took private lessons from Nikolai Avenirovich Martynov. By 1890, she had established her own studio on a small street and began showing her work to the public. During this period, she often used the masculine pseudonym A. L. Rzhevsky, a choice made out of concern for the gender bias present in an industry then dominated by men.

The Domestic Lens

Rzhevskaya focused her attention on domestic genre scenes, capturing the quiet, everyday rhythms of life. Her work often reflected the democratic leanings of the Peredvizhniki movement. In her painting Music, created between 1902 and 1903, she depicted the balcony of an auditorium that is now known as the Rachmaninov Concert Hall in Moscow. The scene captures a specific social reality, as the balcony was a space frequented by those with fewer means.

Her ability to translate atmosphere into paint earned her significant recognition within the Russian art community:

  • In 1897, her painting A Merry Moment was acquired by Pavel Tretyakov during the twenty-fifth traveling art exhibition.
  • The work Twilight received praise from experts at the twenty-seventh traveling art exhibition in 1899.
  • She became a member of the Peredvizhniki in 1899, marking her as one of only two women accepted into the group.

Later Years and Legacy

As the years progressed, Rzhevskaya’s life moved away from the bustling art centers. At the start of World War I, she relocated to Tarusa to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Vasily Vatagin, a sculptor and animal artist. Her commitment to service continued even in her later years; in 1920, alongside Nikolay Kasatkin, she helped organize an art studio for children suffering from bone tuberculosis at the Zakharyino sanatorium in Kurkino.

She remained in Tarusa until her death in 1934. She is buried in the city cemetery there, leaving behind a body of work that documented the subtle, unadorned moments of Russian life through a lens of quiet observation.
