However, the call of the canvas proved irresistible. In 1851, he enrolled at the Trustees Academy, where he studied under the guidance of Robert Scott Lauder and John Ballantyne. This formative period instilled in him a deep reverence for nature, leading him to spend extensive durations sketching and studying the outdoors, a practice that would become the heartbeat of his creative output.
