    David Cox, født den 29. april 1783 i det industrielle hjerte af Deritend, Birmingham, trådte frem fra ydmyge kår, der dybt prægede hans kunstneriske vision. Hans far, en smed og metalsmed, indgydede en arbejdsmoral, som skulle tjene ham gennem hele livet, selvom den unge Davids spinkle bygning viste sig uegnet til essen. Som lærling hos en producent af småting – miniatureportrætter på snusdåser og lakerede spænder – udviste han hurtigt et talent for maleri, et evne næret af en mor med ”overlegen intelligens” og en stille beslutsomhed.
