    Om dette kunstværk

    25L — Alberto Tadiello

Can a sound undermine? To hurt? Kill? Is there a sound that can ward off, reject, bump? Which vibrations and which sonic pressures are bearable by the human body? Have you ever seen an acoustic cannon? It is said to have been used against pirates. And there is talk of murderous murders and shouts capable of pushing away. Perhaps the next great war will be fought just like that. HL (2009), 25 L (2010) and LK100A (2010) are three works that differ in part due to their assumed form and used materials, but all three start from a common base: that of study and research concerning acoustic weapons. These are works that are filled with air, loading it in the compressor basins like in a big belly. They hold their breath to the limit of the possible and then release it violently, strongly. The vocal cords of the horns, solicited, vibrate. The tubes then release that forced breath, lead it and amplify it, adding strident and rustling. The final funnels, like very elegant mouths, allow the breathing with grace and decision. The download. The outburst. Until the end. Until silence. When they are silent, they can be confused with attractive shrubs. From cylindrical stems and large trumpet flowers. Resistant to frost. Prosthesis, to hit. Toxic.

Alberto Tadiello: Sculpting the Echoes of Industry and Nature

Born in 1983 in Montecchio Maggiore, Italy – a town nestled at the foot of the majestic Dolomites – Alberto Tadiello’s artistic journey is inextricably linked to his surroundings. His early life amidst this rugged landscape, coupled with a formal education rooted in visual arts and design at the IUAV University of Venice, has profoundly shaped his distinctive approach to sculpture, installation, and sound art. Tadiello doesn't simply create; he interrogates – questioning the relationship between technology, industry, and the natural world through meticulously crafted works that often feel both familiar and unsettlingly alien.

His studio, an old bakery transformed into a creative haven, serves as a crucial element of his practice. This deliberate choice—working within a space historically associated with domesticity and sustenance—immediately introduces a layer of complexity to his art. It’s a juxtaposition of the mundane and the monumental, mirroring the core themes he explores: the repurposing of industrial materials, the manipulation of electronic devices, and the unexpected beauty found in discarded objects.

    The Alchemy of Materials

Tadiello's work is immediately recognizable for its unconventional material choices. He frequently employs salvaged industrial components – PVC pipes, metal fragments, circuit boards – transforming them into evocative sculptures that defy easy categorization. These aren’t simply assemblages; they are carefully considered interventions, imbued with a sense of history and decay. The use of orange PVC pipes in pieces like ‘25L’, for example, creates an immediate visual impact, reminiscent of both industrial infrastructure and the vibrant hues of autumn foliage. This deliberate blending of aesthetics speaks to his broader interest in disrupting conventional notions of beauty and value.

He’s not merely assembling; he's actively manipulating these materials, often incorporating electronic elements – speakers, sensors, and microcontrollers – to generate soundscapes that accompany or amplify the visual experience. This integration of technology isn’t gratuitous; it serves as a means of exploring the dialogue between human ingenuity and the mechanical world.

    Recognition and Artistic Evolution

Tadiello's artistic trajectory has been marked by critical recognition and numerous awards, including the prestigious Furla Award in 2009 and the ALA Art Prize in 2022. These accolades underscore the growing appreciation for his unique vision and technical skill. His work has been exhibited extensively throughout Italy and internationally, solidifying his position as a significant voice within contemporary art.

His residency programs – including stints at ISCP New York, HIAP Helsinki, and Villa Arson Nice – have provided invaluable opportunities for experimentation and collaboration. These experiences undoubtedly contributed to the evolution of his practice, exposing him to diverse artistic perspectives and pushing the boundaries of his creative exploration. The “Natura Naturans/Naturata” residency in Buenos Aires further demonstrates a commitment to exploring themes of nature and its relationship with technology.

    Sound, Space, and Disruption

A defining characteristic of Tadiello’s work is the incorporation of sound. His installations often generate layered sonic environments that interact with the visual elements, creating immersive experiences for the viewer. Pieces like ‘Backmasking’ (2023) in Rome exemplify this approach, utilizing a megaphone to distort and amplify sounds, generating an unsettling yet captivating atmosphere. This deliberate disruption of auditory expectations is central to his artistic strategy – challenging our perceptions and prompting us to reconsider the ways we engage with space and sound.

His exploration extends beyond mere sonic manipulation; he frequently utilizes “variable intensity rain gradient aloft” techniques, referencing early experimental audio practices, further demonstrating a deep engagement with art history and a willingness to push the boundaries of his medium. Ultimately, Alberto Tadiello’s work is a testament to the power of unconventional materials, technological integration, and a profound interrogation of our relationship with the world around us.

    Viafarini

    Udstillet i Milan, Italy

A Living Pulse of Contemporary Creation

In the vibrant, beating heart of Milan, where tradition meets the cutting edge of modernity, Viafarini stands not merely as a repository for finished works, but as a breathing incubator for the very soul of contemporary art. Established in 1991, this non-profit sanctuary transcends the static nature of traditional museums to function as a dynamic laboratory of innovation. It is a place where the boundary between the artist’s private struggle and the public’s gaze becomes beautifully blurred. Nestled within the historic resonance of Fabbrica del Vapore and along Via Marco d'Agrate, Viafarini serves as a vital bridge between the raw energy of artistic research and the sophisticated dialogue of the global art scene, fostering an environment where ideas are nurtured long before they reach the permanence of a gallery wall.

The architectural essence of Viafarini mirrors its profound mission of connectivity. The space is designed with an adaptable, modern fluidity that invites interaction rather than imposing distance. It is a structure built for the convergence of disciplines, allowing for a seamless transition between the quiet intensity of studio residency and the expansive energy of public exhibition. For the discerning visitor or the interior designer seeking inspiration, the museum offers a glimpse into the "work-in-progress"—a rare opportunity to witness the evolution of form, texture, and concept. This architectural resonance creates a sense of being part of an ongoing narrative, where the physical space acts as a vessel for the transformative power of creative thought.

    The Archive of Italian Vision

What truly distinguishes Viafarini from its peers is its unparalleled commitment to the preservation of the contemporary moment through its "Italian Area" archive. This meticulously curated documentation captures the trajectory of Italian artistic production from 1988 to the present day, acting as a profound temporal map of a nation's visual evolution. Unlike archives that merely store objects, Viafarini’s collection is a living tapestry; each artist featured in this prestigious selection has personally chosen a piece that represents their creative essence, directly linking historical significance with contemporary digital presence. This approach creates an intimate, curated experience that allows collectors and historians alike to trace the lineage of style, medium, and social commentary through decades of Italian excellence.

The breadth of the collection is nothing short of breathtaking, spanning a diverse spectrum of mediums including painting, sculpture, and photography. The museum’s prestige is further cemented by its illustrious residency program, which attracts a global cohort of artists, critics, and curators to Milan. Through this program, Viafarini becomes a crucible where international perspectives collide with local traditions. Notable exhibitions often delve into pressing social, political, and anthropological themes, ensuring that the art on display remains deeply relevant to the zeitgeist. To walk through Viafarini is to engage in a continuous conversation about the state of our world, making it an essential destination for those who view art not just as decoration, but as a vital instrument of cultural discourse.
