The composition is painted using a mix of pastel and watercolour. The imaginary horizontal axis divides the painting into two sections. The bottom part is simply a solid grey background, while the top depicts blue skies surrounding the glow of a red sunset, all of which collectively illustrate a great mansion in the clouds. In the grey background, at first glance seemingly a primordial chaos, stands a cloud castle illuminated by the setting sun. It is the place beyond the consciousness, where the world is no longer perceived through the confines of the mind, but through spiritual sense – the only means for truly comprehending the essence of the world and the human being. The clouds serve as a motif for mystical reality and is often used by M. K. Čiurlionis, the student and colleague of K. Stabrowski, most notably in Day (1904), Evening (1904), and Thoughts (1907).
