Philips Wouwerman (pokřtěn 24. května 1619 – zemřel 19. května 1668) byl neuvěřitelně plodný a všestranný nizozemský malíř, jehož jméno je neodmyslitelně spjato s fascinujícími výjevy lovů, krajin a bitevních scén. Ve svém dobovém kontextu představuje jednu z nejvýznamnějších postav umělecké scény holandského Zlatého věku.
Narodil se v Haarlemu, v srdci nizozemského umění, jako syn Pouwelsa Joostze Wouwermana, který byl rovněž malířem, byť méně známým než jeho syn. Detaily o jeho raném vzdělání jsou sice nejasné, ale věří se, že studoval pod vedením významného haarlemského portrétisty Franse Halsa (1581/85–1666). Ačkoli Halsův specifický styl přímo neovlivnil Wouwermanovo zralé dílo, základní výcvik mu byl pravděpodobně nesmírně cenný. V počátcích své kariéry se Wouwerman nechal inspirovat tradicí bamboccianti, zejména dílem Pietera van Laera (1592/999–po 1642), a přijal jejich zaměření na každodenní život a žánrové scény.
Wouwermanova cesta k vlastnímu stylu byla fascinující proměnou. Zatímco jeho raná díla, vtažená do tradice bamboccianti, se věnovala prostým projevům každodennosti, v polovině 40. let 17. století se začal profilovat jeho charakteristický kompozice. Objevilo se typické diagonální sklonění terénu, často doplněné o strom působící jako repoussoir – prvek vytvářející hloubku obrazu. Tyto scény pak oživovaly postavy, které si často doprovázely koně.
V období svého zralého období (kolem roku 1650–1660) Wouwerman svou tematiku výrazně rozšířil. Jeho plátna se stala světy plné cestujících v krajinách, jízdy cavalry, vojenských táborů i veselých oslav u sedláků. Největší oslavou však zůstává jeho mistrovství v zobrazení koní. Wouwerman dokázal s neuvěřitelnou zručností zachytit různé plemena v dynamickém pohybu, což vedlo historika umění Frederika J. Duparca k prohlášení, že byl „bezpochyby nejúspěšnějším nizozemským malířem koní 17. století“. Jeho styl, definovaný tlumenými barvami, chladnou atmosférou a precizní detailností, vytvářel v obrazech vtipné a anekdotické příběhy, ve kterých často propojoval představivou jižní krajinu s typicky nizozemskou atmosférou.
Wouwermanova tvorba byla vysořovaná již za jeho vlastního života a její popularita rostla i v 18. století. Jeho obrazy se prosadily do prestižních sbírek po celé Evropě, včetně královských sídel v Drážďanech či St. Petrohradě, což svědčí o celonárodním i mezinárodním uznání jeho umění. Jeho neuvěřitelná produktivita byla legendární; zatímco starší katalogy uváděly kolem 800 děl, pozdější soupisy jich překročily 1200. Moderní vědecké studie (např. Schumacher, 2006) však identifikují přibližně 570 autentických děl, čímž uznávají i nespočet následovníků a imitátorů, kteří se jeho stylem inspirovali.
Umělecká tradice v jeho rodině byla silná; jeho bratři Jan (1629–1666) a Pieter (1623–1682) byli rovněž malíři, přičemž mnohá díla byla zpočátku chybně připisována právě Philipsovi. Zatímco u Pieterského díla je Philipsův vliv patrný, on sám si vypracoval vlastní styl, zatímco Jan byl uznán jako samostatnější tvůrce krajin. Wouwermanův vliv se však rozšířil i mimo rodinu na umělce jako Jan van Huchtenburgh či bratři van Bredael. Kromě své umělecké činnosti byl také aktivním členem haarlemské cechovní jednotky svatého Lukáše a působil i jako realitní agent, což dokládá jeho hlubokou integraci do civilního života města.
