V zlatém věku dánského klasicismu málo jmen vystavuje tolik úcty jako Jens Juel. Malíř, jehož štětecec disponoval vzácnou schopností zachytit nejen fyzickou podobu, ale i samotnou duši a společenský status svých subjektů, stojí Jens Juel jako předeminentý portrétista své éry. Narodil se 12. května 1745 v domě svého nevlastního strýce v Balslev v Dánsku a jeho cesta od skromných počátků až po výšiny královské patronáže je svědectvím o mimořádném talentu, který formovala přísná disciplína a nezasytitelná zvědavost vůči světu kolem něj.
Umělecké základy Jens Juel byl položeny daleko od sálů Kopenhague. Jeho rodiče, kteří v něm brzy rozpoznali sklon k umění, ho poslali do Hamburku, aby se učil u malíře Johanna Michaela Gehrmana. Po pět až šest let se obětoval technickým nárokům řemesla a ostřoval dovednosti, které mu později umožnily ovládnout krajinářství, žánrové scény a především, to nejslavnější, portrét. Toto období intenzivního studia mu poskytlo všestrannost, která definovala jeho kariéru a umožnila mu plynule přecházet od intimních detailů jednotlivé tváře k rozlehlé kráse přírodního světa.
V pouhých dvaceti letech se Jens Juel přestěhoval do Kopenhague, aby studoval na Královské dánské akademii výtvarných umění, kde bylo jeho genialita rychle uznáno. Jeho akademické triumfy byly významné; v roce 1767 získal malou zlatou medaili akademie a v roce 1771 prestižní velkou zlatou medaili za díla věnovaná biblickým tématům. Avšak hranice akademie nemohly udržet ducha tak rozlehlého, jako byl jeho. V hledání pulsu současného uměleckého světa se Jens Juel vydal na velkou evropskou cestu, která měla vypracovat jeho klasicistické cítění.
Jeho cesty ho dovedly k nadčasové velkoleposti Říma, kde strávil čtyři roky po boku svých dánských kolegů, jako byl Nicolai Abildgaard, a nasával klasické vlivy, které mu později pronikly do děl. Z Itálie pokračoval do Paříže, epicentra portrétního malířství, a nakonec do Ženevy. Ve Švýcarsku, v domě svého přítele Charlesa Bonneta, se Jens Juel stal slavným. Právě zde prokázal svou schopnost spojit vědecké pozorování s uměleckou grácií, když dokonce ilustroval Naturalistickou a filozofickou historii Charlese Bonneta.
