Ivan Nikolaevič Kramskoj, narozený 27. května 1837 v tichém městečku Ostrogožsk, představuje monumentální postavu v krajině ruské dějin umění. Jeho život byl definován intelektuálním žárem a neochvějnou oddaností uměleckým principům zakořeněným v sociálním realismu, což zanechalo nezmazatelnou stopu jak na jeho současníky, tak na pozdější generace. V ruské provincii Voronež byly Kramskojovy rané roky utvářeny výchovou prosycenou intelektuální zvídavostí a hlubokým zapojením do tehdy rostoucích myšlenek ruské revoluční demokracie. Pod vlivem radikálních myslitelů své éry, jako byli Černyshevskij a Herzen, přijal přesvědčení, že umění nese morální povinnost – povinnost upřímně odrážet společnost a prosazovat její zlepšování.
Toto hluboce zakořeněné přesvědčení o transformativní síle umění ho vedlo až k Petrohradské akademii krásných umění, právě tam však se skutečně probudil jeho rebels který duch.
