A Life of Service and Exploration John Alan Lyde Caunter was a senior British Army officer and a pioneer shark angler off the British coast. Born in Banwell, Somerset, he was educated at Uppingham School and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. His military career included serving as a prisoner of war during World War I, from which he escaped from a camp at Schwarmstedt to reach England via the Netherlands. He later served with the Br
itish Salonika Army and held several high-ranking positions, including commanding officer of the 1st Battalion, Royal Tank Corps in Egypt and commander of 4th Armoured Brigade in the Western Desert campaign.
