Mikhail Vrubel se narodil v ruském Omsku. Jeho dětství a mládí bylo formováno rodinným prostředím s noblesními kořeny a otcem, který sloužil v armádě. Ačkoliv se v roce 1880 úspěšně graduoval na právnické fakultě Petrohradské univerzity, jeho mysl byla neustále zwrócena k plátnu. Na Imperiální akademii umění nastoupil jako student Pavla Chistjakova, kde začal vypracovávat styl, který se svou podstatou radikálně lišil od tradičního realismu jeho tehdejších vrstevníků. Jeho raná formación byla charakteristická specifickým způsobem vidění světa, který upřednostňoval neobvyklý, až idiosynkratický přístup k formě a linii.
Zlomový okamžik nastal v roce 1884, kdy byl pověřen rekonstrukcí 12. století muralů a mozaik v Kyjevské chrámu svatého Cyrila. Tato náročná práce ho přinutila do hloubky studovat středověké křesťanské umění. Čas strávený studiem těchto prastarých děl, včetně cest do Benátek, zásadně proměnil jeho paletu. Začal používat silné, syté tóny, které divákovi připomínaly drahokamy, čímž se definitivně vzdal tlumených barev akademické tradice.
Vrubelova tvorba se často pohybovala v meziprostí mezi fyzikální realitou a říší mýtů. Nebyl fascinován pouze vizuálním obsahem, ale i texturou perských koberců a vzory orientálního umění, které přenášel do svých obrazů pomocí techniky imitující vzhled mozaikových tesseraí. V těchto dílech neměl na mysli striktní realismus. Místo toho využíval dekorativní prostor a neobvyklé formy k zachycení duchovní a psychologické hloubky. Jeho spolupráce s operní pěvkyní Nadezhdou Zabelovou-Vrubelovou také ovlivnila jeho tvorbu, když se věnoval návrhům jezdcích a kostýmů, čímž rozšířil svůj působiště i do oblasti divadelního umění.
Poslední roky Vrubelova života byly poznamenány osobním bojem. Vážný nervový kolaps v roce 1906, komplikovaný nemocí, ho přinutil ukončit svou malířskou činnost. Svá poslední roky strávil v psychiatrické klinice, než v roce 1910 zemřel. Navzdory tragickému vyústění jeho posledního desetiletí zůstává jeho vliv na ruský symbolism a art nouveau klíčovou součástí historie moderního umění. Pomohl připravit cestu pro následná avantgardní hnutí tím, že posunul zaměření ruského malířství směrem k expresivnějšímu a modernistickému vyjadřování.
