Narodil se 7. listopadu 1861 v Birnbaumu, Předním Prussian – dnes Międzychód, a jeho život byl poznamenán jak uměleckým úspěchem, tak osobními obtížemi. Jeho rané dětství bylo stínuováno ztrátami; smrt otce, pekaře, v roce 1872 vedla k přesunu do Berlína s matkou. Tato dislokace možná zakořenila v něm trvalou citlivost na městské krajiny a přelétavost moderního existence. Zpočátku byl učně řemeslníkem, ale jeho umělecká touha byla příliš silná na to, aby ji ignoroval, což ho vedlo do Kunstakademie Düsseldorf v roce 1879.
