Early Life, Family and Training

Born in Kassel on 9 November 1796, Karl Christian Aubel began his path toward the brush within the walls of the Kassel Art Academy. It was there, around 1817, that he first learned the disciplined hand of a draftsman and painter. His early years were marked by a growing ambition that eventually pulled him away from his German roots and toward the great light of France. Between 1819 and 1823, he sought further refinement in Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. His talent led him into the studio of Antoine-Jean Gros, a period of intense instruction that helped shape his technical understanding and artistic vision.

Personal life and domestic stability eventually took hold as his career progressed. On 16 October 1831, he married Wilhelmine Goltz, a union that would see the growth of a family deeply connected to the arts. In 1834, his son Hermann Aubel was born, who would later find his own way as a landscape painter. The family continued to expand with the birth of his son Carl Aubel in 1837. His daughter, Christine Rosalie Aubel, later entered into marriage with the architect August Carl Lange on 5 August 1861, further weaving his lineage into the professional circles of the era.

Travels and Professional Career

After his early training, Aubel sought the light and history of the south, spending the years between 1824 and 1832 wandering through Italy. He found himself amidst the ancient beauty of Florence and Perugia, eventually making his way to the storied streets of Rome and the coastal air of Naples. These years abroad allowed him to absorb the classical spirit that would inform his later work as a portraitist. Upon his return to Kassel in 1832, he began a steady professional life, first serving the community as a drawing teacher.

His talent and dedication soon led to higher honors within the academic circles of his home. By 1833, he had attained the position of professor at the Kassel Art Academy. His influence extended beyond the classroom and into the very structure of the local art scene; in 1835, he became one of the co-founders of the Kunstverein für Kurhessen. This period marked a significant rise in his standing, as he moved from a wandering student to a central figure in the cultural life of his city.

Later in his life, Aubel took on the heavy responsibility of stewardship. From 1844 until 1877, he served as the inspector of the Kassel Gemäldegalerie. In this capacity, he oversaw the preservation and management of significant collections, ensuring that the works of others were protected for future generations. His long tenure in this role reflected a life deeply rooted in the institutional stability of Kassel.

Notable Artistic Commissions

The artist’s hand was often called upon to capture the likenesses of those who shaped the intellectual and cultural life of his era. In the early years of his career, he turned his attention to the distinguished physician and obstetrician Gustav Adolf Michaelis, rendering his portrait in oil on canvas. This work, which dates to about 1821, sought to fix the presence of the man upon the surface of the paint. His ability to translate character into form was further demonstrated in 1826 when he produced Die Italienerin (Maria di Sora), a work that reflected the influence of his time spent in the south.

As his reputation grew, so did the variety of his subjects. In 1833, he applied his brush to the likeness of the singer Henriette Sonntag, capturing the essence of her persona. This was followed by a long engagement with the portrait of Franziska Schier, a task that occupied his attention from 1833 until 1836. Through these portraits, he moved between the private dignity of his sitters and the public personas they held in society.

Beyond the intimate scale of portraiture, Aubel was entrusted with significant religious duties. In 1842, he was commissioned to undertake the restoration of the wing doors for the Marien and Katharinenaltar within the Elisabethkirche in Marburg. This task required a different kind of devotion, moving from the creation of new images to the careful preservation of existing sacred art. His work in the church ensured that these altarpieces remained part of the living history of the sanctuary.
