Jeho raný život mu poskytl základy pečlivé pozornosti k detailu a uznání řemeslné tvůrčí manos, vlastností, které byly vylepšeny díky podnikání jeho otce v oblasti výroby porcelánu. Jeho malby z tohoto období nejsou pouhým zobrazením krajiny; jsou to viscerální výrazy nálady a pocitů, protkané hmatatelným smyslem pro drama a dokonce i smutek. Přijetím estetiky Barbizonu Dupré upřednostnil expresivní barevné palety a odvážné tahy štětcem před idealizovanými nebo uhlazenými reprezentacemi, čímž umožnil, aby samotná textura barvy zrcadlila drsnost země.
Jako klíčová postava barbisonské skupiny si Dupré navázal úzké vazby na další legendární malíře, včetně Théodore Rousseau.
