Joseph Ehrismann: život a dílo

The Light of Alsace

The son of a Catholic baker in Mutzig, Joseph Ehrismann grew up in a landscape shaped by the shifting borders of Alsace-Lorraine. His early years were rooted in the small towns of the region, a place where the light through a window carries the weight of local history. He moved from the quiet life of a baker's son to the studios of Strasbourg and Munich, seeking to understand how color and glass might hold a space. Between 1906 and 1912, he studied under Auguste Cammissar in Strasbourg, later moving to Munich to work with Martin von Feuerstein. It was in these classrooms that he learned the technical discipline required to transform raw materials into something that could hold the sun.

His training in Munich led him to earn the title of Meisterschüler, a distinction that marked his transition from student to a master of his craft. He did not seek to leave the region of his birth, remaining tied to the soil of Bas-Rhin throughout his life. Instead, he turned his focus inward, establishing a workshop that would become a central part of the local landscape. He worked with glass and paint, creating murals and windows that sought to inhabit the architecture of the churches and public buildings around him.

The Workshop and the Glass

Ehrismann’s work was defined by the physical reality of his materials. He was a painter and a master stained glass maker, a dual identity that allowed him to approach a window with the eye of a draftsman and the hand of a craftsman. His creations were not merely decorations but integral parts of the structures they inhabited. Much of his output was tied to the religious and civic life of Alsace, appearing in various locations across the region.

His hands left marks in many places, though the passage of time and the violence of war have claimed much of his output. The following locations hold his work or once did:

  • Strasbourg
  • Mulhouse
  • Colmar
  • Schiltigheim
  • Bischheim
  • Molsheim
  • Meistratzheim
  • Lampertsloch
  • Betschdorf
  • Weitbruch

In places like the Chartreuse de Molsheim, his stained glass windows remain as quiet witnesses to his skill. He worked with a precision that respected the lead and the light, ensuring that his murals and windows felt as though they belonged to the stone walls they adorned.

A Legacy in Stone and Light

The history of the twentieth century was often unkind to the fragile works of artists like Ehrismann. Many of his creations were lost to the fires that gutted churches or the destruction of World War II. What remains is a fragmented but significant record of a man who dedicated his life to the visual language of his home. His work is held in collections such as the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg, where a piece titled Church from 1937 remains a point of reference.

He died in Strasbourg, a French citizen, having lived through the era when his home was a German citizen. This duality of identity is reflected in the quiet, steady nature of his work. He did not seek the grandiosity of the avant-garde, but rather the permanence of the window and the mural. His life was spent in the service of the light that falls through the glass of Alsace.
