John Frederick Kensett se narodil 22. března 1816 v Cheshire v Connecticut. Jeho raná léta byla formována neúnavnou a precizní prací jeho otce, Thomas Kensetta, který byl rodákem z Anglie a pracoval jako rytíř. Již v dvanácti letech se mladík pohyboval v otcově rytířském ateliéru, kde se učil disciplíně čáry a pečlivému zacházení s nástroji. Tato raná imerze do mechaniky reprodukce mu poskytla základy technické přesnosti, které mu zůstaly věrné i dlouho poté, co se vydal cestou malířství.
