David Cox, narozen 29. dubna 1783 v průmyslovém srdci Deritendu v Birminghamu, vyrostl v prostých podmínkách, které hluboce utkvířely v jeho umělecké vizi. Jeho otec, kovář a truhlář, v něm vžil pracovní morálku, která mu sloužila po celý život, i když mladík Davidův drobný vzrost se ukázal jako nevhodný pro práci v kovárně. Počátečně byl v učení u výrobce drobností – miniaturních portrétů na krabičkách na tabák a lakovaných spony – rychle prokázal talent k malování, který podpořila matka s „nadřazenou inteligencí“ a tichou rozhodností. Tato brzká zkušenost s jemnými detaily se později našla v jeho mistrovských akvarelech.
Samotný Birmingham byl v té době krčmá umělecké aktivity, která se pyšnila soukromými akademiemi sloužící potřebám rostoucího průmyslu, ale zároveň podporovala i specifickou školu krajinní malby. Cox se nejprve studoval u Josepha Barbera a poté u Alberta Fieldera, přičemž jeho učení skončilo náhle tragickou smrtí Fieldera. Krátká zkušenost jako malíř kulis v divadle Williama Macreadyho mu poskytla cenné znalosti v oblasti atmosfředické perspektivy a kompozice, dovednosti, které později zdokonalil ve svých ztvárněních přírodního světa.
V roce 1804 se Cox vydal do Londýna za profesními příležitostmi. Ačkoliv se jeho počáteční snaha o zaměstnání v Astleyho amfitéátru nevzvedla, toto období znamenalo zásadní zlom. Obětoval se malbě akvarelů, vystavoval své dílo a postupně si budoval pověst. Jeho sňatek s Mary Ragg v roce 1805 dále stabilizoval jeho život a pár se usadil v Dulwichu. V tom samém roce následovala první z mnoha cest do Walesu společně s Charlesem Barberem, což mu poskytlo surový materiál pro jeho stále sofistikovanější krajiny.
Založení Water-Colour Society v roce 1805 bylo klíčové. Přestože nebyl hned přijat jako člen, Cox se hluboce zapojil do jejích aktivit a nakonec se k nim připojil v roce 1813. Toto spojenectví mu poskytlo platformu pro prezentaci své práce a navázání kontaktu s kolegy umělci, čímž upevnil svou pozici v rostoucí britské umělecké scéně.
Coxův umělecký vývoj byl charakterizován neochvějným odhodláním zachytit podstatu britského venkova. Vyhnul se velkolepým historickým narativům nebo klasickým alegoriím a místo toho se zaměřil na krásu venkovské krajiny – vřesoviště, lesy, břehy řek a pobřežní scény. Jeho rané akvarely jsou známé svou jemnou přesností a pečlivým detailem, který odráží pozorné pozorování přírody. Brzy se však vystoupil za hranice pouhé topografické reprezentace a obdaril svá díla emotivní kvalitou, která hluboce rezonovala u publika.
Získal slávu díky své schopnosti vyjádřit atmosféru – hru světla a stínu, jemné nuance počasí a pocit ponornosti do přírodního světa. Jeho technika zahrnovala jedinečnou kombinaci pečlivého plánování a spontánní exekuce, často pracoval rychle en plein air, aby zachytil prchavé okamžiky krásy. Později v životě se stále více obracel k olejomalbě a vytvořil přes 300 pláten, která jsou dnes uznávána jako jeho největší úspěchy – i když za svého života nebyla tak oceňována.
