Život definovaný portrétem a precizností

Narodili se v Edinburghu ve Spojeném království, Andrew Geddes se vydal cestou, kterou mu rodinná povinnost zpočátku vyvedla z trasy jeho skutečné vášně. Jako syn místopřísedního auditora celního úřadu absolvoval Geddes klasické vzdělání na Royal High School a později na Edinburské univerzitě. Po dobu pěti let sloužil jako úředník na celním úřadě a následoval tak profesní stopou svého otce. Nicméně smrt jeho otce v roce 1803 – muže, který dříve ostře nesouhlasil s uměleckými ambicemi svého syna – osvobodila Geddesa k tomu, aby mohl následovat povolání, které skutečně toužil vykonávat. Tento zlomový okamžik ho vedl do Londýna, kde vstoupil do prestižních škol Královské akademie, aby zdokonalil svůj řemeslo.

Jeho nástup do profesionálního světa umění byl charakterizován stálou přítomností na významných výstavách. V roce 1806 představil dílo St John in the Wilderness v Somerset House, což byl jeho první příspěvek na výstavy Královské akademie.
