David Cox, narozen 29. dubna 1783 v průmyslovém srdci Deritendu v Birminghamu, vyrostl v prostých podmínkách, které hluboce utkvířely v jeho umělecké vizi. Jeho otec, kovář a truhlář, v něm vžil pracovní morálku, která mu sloužila po celý život, i když mladík Davidův drobný vzrost se ukázal jako nevhodný pro práci v kovárně.
