Early Life, Family and Training Artemisia Gentileschi arrived in Rome in 1593, born into a household where the visual arts were the primary language. She was the eldest child of Prudenzia di Ottaviano Montoni and the Tuscan painter Orazio Gentileschi. In the atmosphere of her father's workshop, she received an education that was both practical and rigorous. This environment provided her with a rare opportunity to study the mechanics of
composition and the nuances of light, training that was typically reserved for men in the seventeenth century. Her talent manifested with remarkable speed.
