As an acquaintance of acclaimed American photographers such as Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston and Ansel Adams, Minor White developed a unique style that incorporated spiritual elements in sophisticated and often subtle ways. White is also known for co-founding Aperture magazine in 1952. In this black-and-white image of a Nova Scotia church, White emphasizes the verticality of the small white structure and narrow steeple against a black sky. Positioned slightly off-center, the church has a strong presence in the composition, reinforcing a sense of monumentality within the humble and sparse surroundings.
