The Art of the Stipple
This glass engraving, dated 1790, demonstrates a highly specialized technical approach known as stipple. Rather than using continuous lines, the artist employed a tapping tool and a small hammer to create individual marks upon the surface. This meticulous process allows for a subtle modulation of light and shadow, giving the glass a sense of depth. The resulting texture creates an illusion of form, making the figures appear to emerge from a dark, mysterious background.
The transparency of the medium is essential to the work's effect. By carving into the cooled glass, the engraver manipulates how light passes through the vessel, creating a play of luminosity that defines the relief.
Allegory in Glass
The central subject features cherubic figures, or putti, rendered in relief. These allegorical figures suggest themes of innocence and grace, their forms captured through precise, rhythmic indentations in the glass. The composition is centered on the goblet, which dominates the visual field against a solid black void.
The choice of subject matter reflects the decorative traditions of the late 18th century. Through the interplay of light and the etched surface, the vessel transforms a functional object into a medium for symbolic expression. The clarity of the glass contrasts with the textured, raised appearance of the engravings, emphasizing the craftsmanship required to manipulate such a delicate material.
