كان ويليام بليك ريتشموند رساماً ونحاتاً ومصمماً بارعاً في فنون الزجاج المعشق والفسيفساء. ولد في لندن بالمملكة المتحدة، وهو ابن رسام البورتريه جورج ريتشموند وجوليا تاتام. بدأت رحلته الفنية من خلال دروس خصوصية في منزله، تلتها ثلاث سنوات من دراسة الرسم والتلوين في الأكاديمية الملكية للفنون بدءاً من عام 1858. وقد شكلت جولة استمرت ستة أسابيع في إيطاليا مرحلة محورية في تطوره الفني، حيث وقف متأملاً روائع كبار الأساتذة القدامى مثل ميكيلانجيلو، وتينتوريتو، وجوتو.
حقق ريتشموند نجاحاً مبكراً كرسام للبورتريه، حيث عرض أولى أعماله الكبرى في الأكاديمية الملكية عام 1861. وقد قادته موهبته الفذة إلى انتخابه عضواً مشاركاً في الأكاديمية الملكية عام 1888، ثم عضواً أكاديمياً ملكياً في عام 1895. وإلى جانب براعته في رسم الوجوه، كان مصمماً غزيراً للزخارف الصرحية، ولعل أبرز إنجازاته هي أعمال الفسيفساء في صحن وجوقة كاتدرائية سانت بول في لندن.
تميزت أعماله في تصميم الفسيفساء بأسلوب حيوي يعتمد على استخدام قطع زجاجية مسننة وغير منتظمة، وُضعت بزوايا مدروسة لتلتقط الضوء وتراقصه. هذه التقنية، التي استلهمت روحها من الأنماط البيزنطية والمسيحية المبكرة، جاءت ثمرة تعاون مع صانعي الزجاج "جيمس باول وأبناؤه" لتطوير ألوان ومواد جديدة. وقد ساهمت هذه الابتكارات في إثراء لوحة الألوان المتاحة للفنانين ضمن حركة الفنون والحرف. كما استخدم في تصاميمه للزجاج المعشق، مثل تلك الموجودة في كنيسة سانت ماري في ستريتون، زجاجاً سميكاً ومخططاً لمحاكاة التأثيرات المتلألئة التي تضفيها أعماله في الفسيفساء.
وإلى جانب إبداعه في الفنون البصرية، كان ريتشموند نحاتاً ومدافعاً عن البيئة، وتتضمن أعماله النحتية البارزة ما يلي:
