Historical Role and Political Career
Han Huang was a Chinese economist and politician of the Tang dynasty. Born in 723, he served as a chancellor during the reign of the Emperor Dezong. His career was marked by significant roles, including serving as the prefect of Jin Prefecture, the prefect of Su Prefecture, and the governor of Zhejiang Circuit. He also held the position of military governor of Zhenhai Circuit and was eventually created the Duke of Jin. Throughout his service, he was noted by traditional historians for his frugality and personal integrity, though he was also criticized for being overly harsh and cruel in his governance.
Administrative and Economic Contributions
During the reign of Emperor Daizong, Han Huang served as the deputy minister of census, where he was responsible for the economic affairs of the western half of the empire. He was known for his attention to detail and his efforts to stamp out corruption within the imperial treasury. In his later years, he exercised significant authority as a chancellor and was responsible for the Yangtze-Huai River supply system. He died in the spring of 787 and was buried with great honors.
